Reclaiming Power: The Journey of Healing Through Empowered Self-Care

How Trauma Impacts Us

When I was working with clients in my Counseling practice, I saw firsthand the impact that trauma can have on us. There are several different ways trauma impacts us, but one primary way is having our voice and ability to make choices taken away. We are disempowered. To be a victim is to be defeated.

And if we are being honest, it is impossible to make it through this world without experiencing some form of trauma. Therefore, I am sure you can also relate to this feeling of disempowerment. I know what it is like to be in an unhealthy environment that you cannot escape. The feeling of numbness that comes when the survival strategies of fight or flight are insufficient.

Using Self-Care To Heal

Because of this disempowerment, a huge part of healing trauma involves regaining access to our own power. To reconnect with our voice, as well as our ability to make choices. To remember what we care about most, and our strength to go after it. To remember our worth.

To me, there cannot be healing without self-care.

Self-care is the opposite of victimization.

Self-care says, “Who I am and what I care about is valuable.” To know who we are, what we need, and to set the boundaries necessary to ensure those needs are met…that is the true embodiment of power.

Victim State vs. Empowered State

Self-care brings back our ability to make choices. The choice to live an intentional and authentic life. It also gives us a beautiful opportunity to reconnect with our power, by setting the boundaries needed to protect this wild and precious life of yours that is so worthy of existence.
